... close...? Imagine getting transported to the world of a novel you've read, as one of the minor characters. That is, in essence, what happened to me.
[Iris gets, like, thirty seconds of peace before—]
How does THAT work? Did someone coincidentally happen to write about an alternate reality? Or is it perhaps a world within a world? I've never heard of anything like this before.
Well... you can ask Ichiro about something called an "isekai" genre. Where you are taken from your original world, often a modern one, and then placed in a piece of media you've consumed before. In my case, it was a game I played in my first life - and I also reside in the body and memories of Iris, who was a character in that game. In truth, I've been spending the last six years of my life there... So I just chose to get used to it.
I see! Technically, doesn't that make us all isekais? And you, an isekai inside an isekai. As long as you're ignore needing to consume the media before.
If you could go back to your original world, would you?
In a way, yes. But it depends as well. Sometimes in an isekai, a person retains their full personality and simply makes choices as that character. Other times, their memories and personalities will merge with the character they're inhabiting. In my case, where I'm originally from, I was the latter. But as Viola, I was overwritten and instead had to act only as her, which was very frustrating.
I do miss electricity... But I think there are things I need to do in my second life - as Iris. Returning to my first world isn't an option for me anyway.
The former sounds more like what happened on my little adventure, this Thursday. They're really pushing for us to become characters in this setting, don't you think?
Really? So you'd stay even if you miraculously got the choice to go back? That's a surprise.
So it would seem. I've been trying not to compare my own experience to it too much but - There are enough similarities I find myself wondering....
Hmm... I think living as Iris has given me things I didn't have in my first life. But maybe when I'm done with all my projects, and it was possible, I'd think about going back to the modern world to retire.
Well... You've heard of people receiving memories of a life that didn't belong to them, correct? Especially on these field trip excursions - it sounds familiar to me. To be set into a role, and your survival is dependent on how well you can manipulate that role within set parameters in order to do well.
Oh - of course. I'm currently Iris Lana Armelia, the eldest daughter of the Armelia Dukedom. I was appointed at Acting Fief Lord over some of my family's territory, and to be able to better contribute to commerce and trade, I also founded the Azuta Corporation. So I act as a government administrator as well as a the CEO. My days are often filled with paperwork, a few inspections on the fief, and business dealings. My original name was Ayame - though it would feel odd to go by that now.

In my most recent home, there's no technology.
It's set in a semi-medieval place.

But now I'm dying of curiosity. What is it that you do as Iris? And do you recall your original name at all?
