Oh, I see. Yes, it's possible to stay on campus through breaks - you can take classes then too. However I normally leave campus even if only for a bit.
That's good. No good staying in one place too long.
I hope I haven't wasted your time asking you only questions about yourself. I was a little curious about all four of you, but I feel a bit strange asking a teenager personal questions.
Oh, I don't consider it a waste - only that it feels a bit rude of me to not be asking you anything in turn. But I'll try to wait until we meet properly if that's more comfortable for you.
Well, given that I am not a teenager, you may ask me what you like and I'll let you know if it is too invasive. But Luke would like to get to know you too, I'm sure. He's very earnest about this as well - it's quite endearing.
We're familiar if only for how much time we've spent together lately - but we met just a little while ago when we arrived to prepare the Dorms. Our paths didn't cross before then.
My impression is he's a pretty good kid. He always seems to be concerned with others. Our welcome letter mentioning being kind to the other dorms, and in the conversations he had with everyone when we first met you. It makes me a little concerned if he's taking on so much work and doesn't even go home for breaks.
But I sound like an old man saying these things, don't you think? I have no idea how to speak to teenagers. I will give it a try, but. . .
Old man? You're too hard on yourself. I think you sound like a kind, concerned person! I think that Luke's trying very hard to figure himself out, too... But he does have a lot of wisdom that even I didn't have at that age! I'm almost envious.
Still, I think the fact that you're looking out for him is very sweet - he may be awkward at first, but I'm sure it'll mean a lot to him. That's just how teenagers are. I don't want to ask you to look after him when I'm sure he wants to be a good Dorm Head - but maybe you can look after each other.
You're very generous, thank you. I'm sure it'll be a wonderful relationship. Though maybe I shouldn't be getting involved in the affairs of other Dorms too much... I'd hate to overly meddle.
Oh, no offense at all. Just a little bit surprised, I suppose. Beauregard may have mentioned this - I wish it came up more naturally so I could explain it more readily but Dorm Heads are typically capable of witnessing the conversations of their Residents. I have no intention of invading anyone's privacy so I've refrained from utilizing it aside from certain safety concerns, but I can't deny that sometimes my ears burn a bit when people discuss we Dorm Heads.
Both of them - but not at all times. If we're busy and paying attention to something else, it's not as though I can (or want to) split my attention on two things.
I find this to be quite a breach of privacy, personally. I appreciate your telling me directly and your discretion in exercising this ability, but I still find it rather alarming.
Understandably so. It's not as though I disagree with you. It can be considered one step further than having the keys to everyone's Suites within the Dorm - a safety precaution in order to ensure that everyone's well-being is looked after. Whether or not it's a step that all of us agree with, or even use with our Residents, is another matter - but it is a mechanism that exists.
I suppose it is something to take up with my own Dorm Head. But I have not had pleasant experiences being spied upon. It would be quite impossible for me to make the effort to trust you knowing that my conversations were being observed, and I would prefer to be able to continue to make that effort.
It may be a small consolation, but you needn't worry about me observing you through one of my own Dorm Residents, if that's a concern you possess. I've already told Beauregard that anything I learn about her or her business without her permission would sit poorly with me. I feel the same about everyone else that I've met. While I'm aware that being told of this surveillance may feel a bit more stifling - at the same time not mentioning it at all when I see an opportunity feels duplicitous.
No, no. I appreciate your telling us, and that you don't intend to misuse it. You are being considerate. As you can see, I have a rather strong reaction to such things.
Perhaps so - but prior poor experience with being spied upon would naturally warrant such a reaction. It's an understandable thing. And so... I do hope that you're alright, Caleb. I could arrange to have some tea sent to Fall Dorm perhaps? Though it'd just be delivered outside the door...
If you're certain! I just wanted to be sure to offer.
And I didn't mention it earlier but - thank you, for wanting to try to trust us. I know that all of you don't have to, but you've been quite kind considering the situation.
If you have overheard anything then you must know I have a lot of skepticism of the information we have been given and the particulars of this situation. But that does not necessarily need to translate to skepticism towards people who have tried to be helpful and kind. It cannot hurt to give the benefit of the doubt.
I needn't overhear anything to understand the doubt - some others who have spoken to me expressed as much as well. It's a bit interesting to try to understand from your perspective. From ours, it sounds similarly far-fetched.
But as we try to reconcile information and find a resolution, it is nice to do so without active animosity. A surprise to me, in truth, but a pleasant one.
Different experiences are sure to lead to different impressions. For my part, I was dealing with some very dangerous people before coming here. Finding myself here suddenly, without my belongings or magic, was a little alarming, and it would take a certain degree of power to successfully pull this off.
I've never heard of your school, so I have no basis for understanding its workings.
Beauregard told me that you are part of a group of mercenaries? The Mighty Nein? (Big Nope? Very funny.) Were you in the middle of a struggle before you arrived here? You aren't injured, are you?
In truth, I've been thinking a great deal about 'magic' since you brought it up to me. Some conversations have been illuminating - Ichiro explained something to me about a 'magic that is closer to technology' and I found that to resonate more easily. But if you could explain what your magic is to me, I would appreciate it. If only so I could have a better idea of what varieties may be out there, and how to reconcile the differences.

Such a quick and quite likely accurate assessment...
You're a very astute person, Caleb...
