I have wondered whether . . . the compulsion we're describing is something like what we talked about, the script. Or whatever wants us following the script.

Whereas what is happening with that group is trying to avoid kills that are following the compulsion?

I also wonder why the compulsion for the other kinds just drop at the end of trial.

The trial is the point of it, perhaps? The compulsion gets them far enough that they won't simply confess and spoil the fun?
