FALL COMMON ROOM - WEEK 5

The common room of the Fall Dorm has soft, dimmer lighting; plush carpet over wood; and several comfortable chairs and sectionals. A few big windows overlook the dormitory area of campus, but there is also a single, cozy bay window on one side.

A television and bluetooth surround-sound are here for Fall students who are more inclined to be tech savvy. In the cabinets under the entertainment stand are an assortment of board games, but the television does have a generic "free tv" app for shows and music.

Above the enormous center fireplace is a moody painting.

This week, there's something else.

specialty room.

Through a door on the first floor, there is an antigravity room. Stepping just a few feet through the doorway will lift everyone up into the air. The seating and most of the rest of the room remains somehow rightfully in place on the floor and will not move. Students, however, can grab pillows and blankets, cups or bowls, or other small items to bring into the air with them.

Better question, too. Who qualifies as the winners? What about the dead who were a part of the winning dorm? Would it count them, too? Assuming any of this is even real.

Well...they get taken off the dorm lists when they die, right? I don't think dorms matter anymore in the daycare. So...no, probably?

Then that's another reason not to want this shitty prize. What's the point? Unless you're making a world that revives the dead, brings all of us, and brings everyone all of us could ever want...

Maybe it could!

...but even then, that's still no good. That's not...that's not a real world. Not if you wanna actually live there.

It's bullshit is what it is. Especially after we've spent weeks losing people that would make for a world we want.

Well, technically we'd be able to bring them back for it, right? But still...making your own world just feels like...playing with a dollhouse.

[ fun, maybe, but ultimately fake and weird. ]

If you make your own world, nothing changes. Good or bad. It's...kind of not really living, you know? Maybe that's just what I think.

Yeah! Yeah, that's exactly it! It's not really a prize anyway!

I mean, it makes sense that we should take everything with a grain of salt, but... at the same time, we don't have anything else to go off of.

[ beat ]

And...if that one note from one of the first field trips was right, we're running out of time. Six out of eight weeks.

Yeah. Believe it but not too much. The next two weeks are going to be hard on all of us. We have to stay focused.

[he says this, but he kind of sounds like he's saying it automatically than actually listening to himself.]
