CAIMAN Even just as starters, the thing with Caleb that was really funny is just that he's so calm. He's pretty much the calmest person that Caiman has ever met or known, because people are usually much more loudly reactive to him or are calm yet relatively upbeat. He's never actually had a presence so level-headed around him like Caleb; despite how he comes off as an obstinate blockhead that does whatever he wants (which is true), he is also fairly reactive to people's attitudes around him. So whether either of them knew it or not, he was generally a touch calmer in Caleb's presence just because it naturally bounced off that way. That plus how Caleb tended to generally humour him put him in a kind of dad-uncle-mentor vibes objectively even if Caiman wouldn't see it that way for him personally; however he did definitely see Caleb as having Cool Uncle Vibes.
That combined with learning the stuff about how in Caleb's world, magic is something you can pick up, plus his stance that mildly agreed that some wizards ARE bad despite being a wizard himself, really made Caiman curious! Because at least in the start of the series, his world is pretty cut and clean where this is concerned -- in his few years of living with his amnesia, his world was very clean-cut Humans vs Sorcerers. He's from a canonpoint where he's learned that not all Sorcerers are bad and some are even his friends, but he hadn't heard of a case where magic users think magic users are bad so he was pretty curious on why Caleb thought that way even if he never got to prod at him about that. Caleb did make a disclaimer that he wasn't a nice guy though, but at that point that Caleb had humoured him pretty well, he was already a nice guy in Caiman's books. He's simple!!! If Caleb isn't trying to dunk on him or kill him actively, that makes him a pretty okay guy.
For a good majority though, he really just saw Caleb as a chill guy and a fellow Fall Dorm; he liked him plenty, but wasn't overly fond of him as much as he was just super amicable and down to hang with the guy. As Caiman, he had absolutely zero negative thoughts about Caleb, and considered him what we would call "pretty cool for a magic user" (tm). Being such an even presence, Caleb was in the camp of people who was so unabrasive to Caiman's personality that he'd be listened to pretty honestly and seriously without much stupidity or silliness from Caiman's end.
Then Week 3 (wipes sweat off forehead). He, ICly, truly had no idea what the fuck was going on ever since he woke up on Friday and was just in nonstop dread for nine hours as he went through the trial motions and it was becoming increasingly clear that he was responsible for Molly's death. He also found it really difficult to try to approach Caleb and Beau both for this, seeing how upset both of them were, rightfully so, even though he really wanted to argue at the both of them that he didn't do it. Caleb surprised him by giving him a shot at innocence though, coming to talk to him and ask him sincerely if he did it or not, ask him about his extra credit, et cetera and even tried to find a "real culprit" behind the murder that wasn't Caiman -- this really just spoke to the actual fair and good part of Caiman, because despite his super blase attitude about murder and the like, he's also simultaneously inherently incapable of putting up with injustice done unto him or those he cares about, and he did care about Caleb. And he's kinda sentimental, Caleb was giving him a shot so it really convinced him to keep trying on his end to cooperate with the trial and try to figure out what was going on, too! Because ultimately, he was hoping Caleb was right.
It's really a lot in part due to Caleb's presence and his importance to the murder, and also his approach to Caiman that kept him pretty docile and cooperative throughout the trial I think, because otherwise I think he would've been really loud, upset, and constantly protesting in denial throughout the entire thing, because how dare you!! But Caiman understands how important friends are and the fact that he was on good terms with Caleb, and being able to imagine how he feels (after all, what if it was Nikaido that was murdered), but still being approached fairly diplomatically about it made him swallow down being indignant to actually trying to find the murderer instead.
And jail pc!!! He really was having a hard time talking to Caleb after that, because even if Caiman hates the idea of it, he'd understand fully that Caleb had every right to like, try to set him on fire right then and there... but he didn't, he still decided to talk to him calmly and objectively and still continue to try to figure out the truth behind what happened. It really fully contradicted the way he'd learned the world, because where he's from, Sorcerers didn't even need a reason to try to kill him, and here was Caleb! With every reason in the world to! But not??? He really learned a lot from Caleb whether he realized it or not and got pretty significant growth from his interactions with him now that I think about it. Had Caiman continued on, he would've left with a totally different outlook on his world's inherently broken system.
That aside, because of Caleb and other jail pcs that really hammered into him that people actually gave a shit about him and the like, he'd resolved by the next morning that he cared about everyone enough that he wasn't going to cause any more damn trouble if he could help it. While he had no intentions of just lying down and dying, he had intended to at least make the execution easier by hiding his more sentimental thoughts and let the executioner deal with him with as little emotion involved as possible...
THEN CALEB WALKED DOWN THE EXECUTION AISLE AND HE WAS LIKE (INTERNALLY) "FUCK". Because of the chances Caleb gave him, Caiman really found this execution to be difficult for him (if it had been Beau for example, he would've counted on her immediately trying to beat the shit out of him because he already knew she hated his guts at the time, so he wouldn't have to think about jack all). He was still committed to this final act bullshit though so he generally kept from reacting too much to Caleb so he could just get the job done and go.
Caiman really did feel bad when he hurt Caleb a few times but killing him was definitely off the table for Caiman -- he doesn't want to die, but he also sure didn't want it to be at the cost of Caleb's! So he really did kind of freak out a bit during the scare prank when he'd been thrown off stage, and was genuinely relieved when Caleb showed up after all but because of that scare, he finally broke his attempt of an act by yelling at him to get a move on because god damn he really just wanted this whole stupid thing of his body being used to hurt / kill people he's rather fond of to stop. He'd made a deal with Lucretia beforehand and everything, and had her step in to stop him while Caleb was casting Polymorph and the rest is history.
The Smash Bros. The turtles. The Mr. Saturns. . . also thank you sm for being a chill executioner too!!! It was a very fun execution for me and hope it was enjoyable for you too!
Also between Frumpkin and Kissa, Caiman has learned: cats are soft and excellent... thank you for this knowledge...
AIKAWA And then after Caleb ripped his head off, he had a nightmare dream and kind of remembered everything and woke up... and immediately struggled with reconciling his regained memories and the ones as Caiman, especially based on what he knew and realizing that he was right, and that Molly's murder really wasn't an isolated freak incident that happened only at Wiwaldi. That, combined with his want to completely ignore it, and also distance / separate himself from being associated or known as Caiman, caused him to end up ghosting a lot of people especially on the living side. Including Caleb, to whom he still felt really bad about for a multitude of reasons and felt like he couldn't face him (nor Beau).
He did face Molly because he didn't really have a choice with Daycare, but with the other CritRoles, he really just could Not bring himself to reach out to either of them... even though he got a nice letter from Caleb!!! I'm so sorry he was a dick, he did get it and read it but just chose not to respond at all or even ask about it when he came back. I'm wheezing. In his mind he's just leaving it and respecting Caleb's privacy or something he's stupid.
Similarly to with Beau, he felt really bad for them whenever they were really sad in public, though was also really glad whenever Caleb seemed to manage to be in good spirits. He was perfectly glad to have Molly be raptured back onto the living side, and watched the CritRole reunion a little bit and as far as he was concerned, that was the End Of It (tm). They got their tiefling back and Aikawa would make himself totally absent from their lives and they could continue where they left off and be happy and he wouldn't bother them or dredge up any more bad memories! This was also a selfish desire for himself too, because he didn't want to think about how he murdered Molly so his thinking was that if he just completely distanced from them, he wouldn't have to think about it either and therefore escape. Things were fixed, right, so why dwell on it anymore!! That was his hopeful logic and why he was so hellbent on avoiding the CritRoles at any cost.
Also similar to what I said on the Beau tl;cr, Aikawa was also in a really bad mental state by Week 6 Sunday. Due to a CYOA accident, he'd gone a little bit Kai berserk and it shattered his escapist ideals that he'd been riding on for the first two weeks of being deadzo, reminding him why he was dead to begin with and that it was something he couldn't escape. Because of that, and also because he was relating too hard to the apparent reveal of fake multiple identities and struggling to figure out "who am I" and what it means to be a real identity, he'd been kind of majorly psyching himself out that he was the worst person here and if there was any identity that should be overwritten and erased then it should be him, since it'd also do him a favour and free him from his weird issues.
He didn't want to face Caleb as it was because of his other issues but also because Caleb had been so unfairly fair to him in prior incidents, he thought Caleb was the one who he should least land with unnecessary baggage and he wouldn't know what to do if Caleb told him that his thoughts weren't the solution (unfortunately fortunately, Beau told him so anyway). SO HE JUST RAN I'M SO SORRY WHGHDKGH
That being said though he still was like, respecting Caleb from a distance and hopes he was doing well, Aikawa is just useless about trying to be honest with deep emotions. But!! Ultimately he does like this sad fire-man and supports him. Beau invited him to Exandria and he's a woobie and his desire to be happy is stronger than his sad so he's definitely going to take it because he wants to escape his weird terrible life at least sometimes, get a breath of fresh air and all that, but he's going to be really awkward around Caleb for a bit I think. But he has absolutely nothing against Caleb outside of his awkwardness so I really hope they hang out and get to be friends proper!!
Overall, he would also die for Caleb and give whatever he's got to support him and his friends. His tl;cr is assigned Risu / Kasukabe (60).
SORRY FOR WORDWALLING BUT I'M SO GLAD I GOT SOME CR WITH YOU THIS GAME :sob: I got my ass kicked so hard by critroles this game catch me crying as I try to finally absorb this series. Caleb do feel me good.....
