A lot of us - not all of us, but a lot of us, myself included - are a little bit used to this type of environment. Not exactly this, but having to be on the lookout for threats, hidden danger. . .

In this case... well, I hope that you are eventually able to reach a point where you can comfortably believe your judgments are not wrong.
You are the one studying politics, right? A lot of the political types don't tend to appreciate distractions from their own agenda. Easier to pretend it's less of a threat than the thing you want to be focused on and hope it goes away?
