SUMMER COMMON ROOM - WEEK 0

The common room is as bright and open as the rest of the dorm. Beanbag chairs and even more hammocks are situated around for any of your resting needs, because who needs couches? There are a few blankets on the couch just for comfort, but the temperature is never cold enough to need them because of chill. There's also an absurd amount of pillows.

The walls are decorated with paintings that are either modern art pieces or done by kindergarteners. There are also photographs tacked onto the walls as well, of seemingly random things like a vase of flowers, a mailbox, a bird on a tree branch. The photos are less about grand views and feels more like someone testing out a camera.

On a table is a welcome basket.

In the common room, there's a door that leads to what can only be described as an Occult Room for some strange reason. Unlike the rest of the dorm, this room is dimly lit and is crowded with items—a skeleton that may or may not be real, taxidermy animals, really creepy looking dolls, an actual coffin, etc. On a table to the side is a Ouija board, a few tarot decks, and crystal ball.

For one, he's a book and I think that explains a lot.

He's a talking book. Makes a lot of smart comments. Always speaks using big words.

I've... never met a book that can talk before. I guess where you're from must be pretty different from Paris.

[amain]

Talking books aren't normal where I'm from, either. Everyone kind of accepted it after a while, though.

What's "Paris" like?

[wtfox]

Oh, wow... I've never had to describe Paris before. Um, it's a huge city... they call it the "City of Lights," you know! It's really beautiful at night.

[amain]

The "City of Lights"... Like running on electricity?

[wtfox]

Of course electricity! What else would it run on?

[amain]

[ Tilts his head cause this is an easy question. ]

... Candlelight?

[wtfox]

People haven't relied mostly on candles for a couple hundred years now...

[amain]

I could say the same thing about electricity in my world.

[ CANDLELIGHT IS RELIABLE ]

[wtfox]

Really? But why?

[amain]

I'm not too sure myself... Humans seemed really smart back then, but none of us can use what they made in the past. I guess they weren't smart enough in this regard.

[ imagine humans not screwing themselves over. ]

[wtfox]

[sounds fake]

You can't use it? Didn't they leave instruction manuals? Wait, I guess that's a silly question, most people I know just throw it away and figure it out for themselves even now.

[amain]

Aren't manuals meant to help you?

[ Nier is the type to read the manuals and if it doesn't make sense, then he'll try it out. However, he nods because this all makes sense. ]

... I guess that's why humans from where I'm from are where they are. Our ancestors didn't like manuals.

[wtfox]

Well, yeah, but a lot of the things people make are supposed to make our lives easier, so I guess it's just, like, we think how to use it ought to be obvious even without a manual...? Otherwise, what's the point?

[amain]

I thought that, too, but...

[ HE SHRUGS. HE JUST DOESN'T KNOW. ]

You can keep talking about Paris.

[wtfox]

Oh, okay! Well, it's a really old city, so there's a lot of historical buildings. The architecture's nice! I kind of prefer the architecture in Rome, though, but that's where I was born, so I guess I have a bias.

[amain]

Nothing wrong with having favorites. They must be beautiful.

[ Nodding. ]

But you're living in Paris now... is it close to Rome?

[wtfox]

Well, not exactly... Paris is in France, and Rome is in Italy. But my mom works for the Italian embassy and she's stationed in Paris, so we live there now.

[amain]

Oh, so they're different countries... I've always wanted to travel, but I've only gone to other villages near mine.

[wtfox]

...and I guess you've gone here, now, too! Although I don't know where "here" is.

[amain]

[ He laughs a bit because she's right. ]

Wherever "here" is, it could be worse. I'm sure we'll learn more about this place later.

[wtfox]

I hope so! And I hope it's sooner rather than later... I don't really like waiting.
